The three main strong magnet classifications are electromagnets, magnets of the permanent type, and magnets that are temporary. As the term suggests, permanent magnets retain their magnetic force perpetually. Special precautions should be observed in the use and storage of very powerful magnets. Mishandling even the smallest rare earth magnets can result in severe injury or death. Safe storage is also essential. These powerful magnets must never be allowed near hard disks, computers, credit cards, or USB drives. Complete erasure of all data stored thereon is the probable consequence of such careless close proximity. Likewise, pacemakers can malfunction very easily and rapidly if the wearer comes too close to a rare earth magnet.
Magnets are a mainstay of contemporary life. Many devices we take for granted would be impossible to operate without temporary, permanent, or electro magnets. Very strong magnets such as neodymium types are extreme fascinations; further practical uses for them are likely to be devised in the near future.
Extreme caution is always highly advised in the use and handling of strong magnets, however. They must be kept at sufficiently far distances from electronics products.
